HISTORY

Founded in 1697 by Spanish Jesuit missionaries, Loreto Mexico was the first Spanish settlement on the Baja Peninsula.  Originally named the Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto, the town served as the capitol of Las Californias province from 1697-1777.  Today, Loreto is home to 15,000 people, and is still dotted with beautiful historical monuments  built in the 18th and 19th centuries.  It is part of the protected Loreto Bay National Marine Park, and boasts wonderful eco-tourism and fishing throughout the nearby islands. Local fishermen often take visitors out in their small "pangas" boats, and many restaurants are happy to cook up your fresh catch for lunch.

LOCATION

The town of Loreto is located on the east coast of the Baja California Peninsula, on the Sea of Cortez.  The Loreto Retreats villas are located 5 miles (9 km) south in a friendly beachside community called Nopoló, or Loreto Bay.

SAFETY

Loreto is one of the safest areas in all of Mexico.  On top of that, the Loreto Bay community, where our villas are located, has 24 hour security.  Although many of the security personnel do not speak English, they are exceptionally friendly and will do anything they can to help- whether it be walking you home at night, calling a taxi for you, or getting you medical attention- they are always there to help.

Loreto Bay is also one of the few places in Mexico with clean tap water.  Although most people still choose to drink bottled water, the tap water is completely safe to drink.
